Statement:
I was born in the wheatbelt town of Wickepin just as the Second World War was heating up. I have fond memories of going to school-a tiny, one-teacher establishment-near our home by horse and cart. Later when that school closed for lack of students, I went by school bus to Wickepin Primary School via a long dusty route over heavily corrugated roads. At age 14 I was sent off to Albany to board and attend high school. It was at high school that I first became interested in art.

My mother painted before her marriage, but had totally given it up when she married. Art materials were too expensive and in short supply, besides which she had more important things to consider such as workmen to feed, children to raise, cows to milk, bread to bake etc. Life was hectic for women on farms in those days. Her paintings graced our walls and I thought they were just wonderful and she was so clever, but I never dreamed I might paint.

Art lessons at primary school had not really captured my imagination. I had greasy crayons and the water colours never did anything for me. It was actually in my second year at high school that I first discovered art. We were given exercises that worked for me. We had a wonderful art teacher, a lady with a vibrant personality who was always encouraging and made learning interesting. As I only has 3 years of secondary school, I really didn't do much, but the seed was sown. I wanted to paint.

Over the years I made a few tentative efforts at various times but nothing really took hold. In 2008 I had the opportunity to try painting with a group of ladies and really enjoyed it, but it wasn't until 2011 when I found Jana's studio that I began to feel more confident. With Jana as my teacher I have felt really encouraged to pursue my passion and now with the aid of a palette knife I happily apply layers of paint to canvas to depict some of the scenery I have encountered on my travels throughout this great country.
