Statement:

I have a fascination with old houses, fairy tales and history and this is where my inspiration and ideas come from. Crumbling old houses hold the greatest appeal to me as when I look at their bare bones, I see the ghosts of the past, and imagine the love and hardship that has gone into building that space and the lives of generations with their hopes, loves and tragedies that have passed between those walls. There are many such houses in all the countries I have visited to date, and some of the most interesting ones I have seen in Tuscany, Sicily and Bulgaria - these places seem to come to me on their own accord rather than me seeking them out – I just happen to stumble across them all the time. My art has no social or political agenda, although nothing exists in a vacuum and our thoughts and deeds are constantly shaped by the external environment. If I have to align myself to some values these would be summarised in Dostoevsky’s thought “Beauty will save the world”. I seek and find beauty in the most unexpected places such as those crumbling old houses I mentioned, the smooth yet bumpy skin of a pumpkin and the bark of the crooked old tree in the backyard. My favourite artists are the Austrian masters Gustav Klimt and Egon Shiele, the last one being the undisputed ruler in my favourite artists’ gallery, whose sure hand and powerful portraits will never stop mesmerising me. Finally, I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have met and worked under the guidance of the talented and inspiring artist, friend and teacher Jana Vodesil Baruffi, owner of the Metamorphosis Art Gallery with who I am very proud to be associated.
